Summer Jobs+ Initiative PDF Print E-mail

Friends:

President Obama and Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced the Summer Jobs+ Initiative, a call-to-action for American business, nonprofits, and government to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth in the summer of 2012.

Employers can accept the President's call-to-action and make a "Pathways Pledge" by choosing at least one of the following three pathways to employment for low-income youth:

·         Life Skills: Provide youth work-related soft skills, such as communication, time management and teamwork, through coursework and/or experience. This includes resume writing or interview workshops and mentorship programs.

·         Work Skills: Provide youth insight into the world of work to prepare for employment. This includes job shadow days and internships.

·         Learn and Earn: Provide youth on-the-job skills in a learning environment while earning wages for their work.

Our goal is to make provide 250,000 summer jobs opportunities for American’s youth. Over 180,000 commitments have been made to date by our partners – more than doubling the commitments made in 2011.

Employers can commit to offering employment opportunities for youth this summer by signing up HERE. In addition, the White House Council for Community Solutions has developed a toolkitfor employers interested in participating in the initiative.

Within 60 days, the Administration will be launching a job bank, a one-stop search tool for youth to access postings for any participating employers seeking to reach them where they are online. Youthand communities can sign-up HERE to be alerted when the jobs bank goes live.

Below you can find more information and resources about the initiative. Please share with your networks and youth in your community.

We hope you join the Administration in providing hundreds of thousands of summer jobs for America's youth.

"America's young people face record unemployment, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they've got the opportunity to earn the skills and a work ethic that come with a job. It's important for their future, and for America's. That's why I proposed a summer jobs program for youth in the American Jobs Act — a plan that Congress failed to pass. America's youth can't wait for Congress to act. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. That's why today, we're launching Summer Jobs+, a joint initiative that challenges business leaders and communities to join my Administration in providing hundreds of thousands of summer jobs for America's youth"

— President Barack Obama
